Most of the more than 17000 Indonesian islands are situated on the RING OF FIRE where volcanoes are common. These fire spitting mountains can get pretty high. The Gunung Agung of Bali which erupted in 1963 is more than 3000 meters. And it looks much higher when you watch it from sea level from which it rises directly to the clouds. It is possible to climb it in three to five hours. Starting at the temple Pasar Agung.
The Gunung Rinjani of neighbouring Lombok has got an elevation of more than 3800 meters. It takes two days to reach the top. A beautiful sunrise is guaranteed or a layer of white clouds thick like powder snow in Alaska.
Other volcanoes that can be climbed are abundant. I just mention the Gunung Batur in Bali and the famous Mount Bromo in Jawa.
